Blizzards Players at 50th Wesmet Classic



Wesmen Classic Set To Celebrate 50 Years 

Blizzards players are very well represented





We have total of 7 players in this tournament, 7 Blizzards players on Sisler High School and 1 at Garden City Collegiate.

Sisler  HS - Shawn Maranan, Jalen Millan, Jerome Santoyo, Jonathan Salunga , Devyn Bandusiak, Andrei Sansano, Raynald Manuel. Garden City Collegiate - JC Aaron. Kelvin - Ethan Lam & Jhe Jhe San Jose. Fort Richmond -Josh Charr, Emmanuel Adesida.


For 50 years the annual "Holiday Tradition" has showcased the best Men's Basketball and High School Boy's tournaments. The Wesmen Classic holds a special place in the hearts of local sports fans, both as a holiday meeting place to catch up with old friends, and as a prime venue to catch some of the best CIS basketball and High School action in the country.

Over the years, basketball enthusiasts and casual fans alike have gathered at the old Riddell Hall, the Winnipeg Arena, the Convention Centre and now in its current home the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in the Duckworth Centre, to witness dedicated student athletes give it their all in what is still the premier basketball event in the province.


The Metro News High School Boy's Classic will feature eight of the top Varsity Boys' basketball teams in Winnipeg. The event will take place from Tuesday, December 27th to Friday, December 30th.


The High School Championship Final will take place on Friday, December 30th at 6:00 pm

The duo of Shawn Maranan and Andrei Sansano combined for 46 points to lead the Sisler Spartans to a 91-81 victory over the Kelvin Clippers in the opening game of the Metro News High School Boy's Classic. Maranan a grade 11 guard notched a team high 25 points while Sansano a grade 12 guard scored 21 points, including four-three pointers. Grade 12 forward Deng Guluak scored a game high 27 points for the Clippers. Sisler went into the halftime break with a 46-36 advantage.  Maranan for his efforts was named the Player of the Game.

Sisler will face the winner of the Fort Richmond-John Taylor matchup in one semi final scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

There will be a new Wesmen Classic High School Champion this year. The Sisler Spartans upended the defending Wesmen Classic champions, John Taylor Pipers 99-90 in semifinal action at the Metro News High School Classic Wednesday at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.  Player of the Game Don Dayrit led the Spartans with a game high 33 points, including eight from three point territory. Malachi Alexander was also on fire scoring 27 points, including three-three pointers. Andrei Sansano finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Riki Zimbakov had his second big game of the tournament finishing with a double-double 39 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Ly also had a double-double consisting of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Brett Armstrong finished with 11 points.  Both teams had their offensive game going on all cylinders in the opening half. Both teams shot above 50 percent from the field, including three point territory. Sisler went into the halftime break with a 60-47 lead.  John Taylor made a charge in the third quarter, outscoring the Spartans 19-13 to cut the deficit to 73-66 heading into the final frame. The Spartans stood their ground in the fourth quarter outscoring the Pipers 26-24 to complete the 99-90 victory.

Sisler will move onto the Championship Final against the winner of the Garden City-Dakota semi final. The final will be held on Friday at 6:00 p.m. John Taylor will play the loser in the third place game Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.

Dakota 72 Garden City 50 [Semi-Final]

The Dakota Lancers advanced to the Championship Final of the Metro Times High School Boy's Classic with a 72-50 semifinal victory over the Garden City Fighting Gophers Thursday afternoon. Dakota will face the Sisler Spartans in the Championship Final that will take place Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.  The Lancers put on an offensive display in the opening half by jumping out to a 41-16 lead. The struggling Fighting Gophers could not get on track in the opening half. Garden City finished the half 6-of-43 (14%) from the field. Dakota put the game out of reach in the second quarter, outscoring Garden City 27-6.
Garden City made a brief run in the third quarter but was unable to make up the deficit in the 72-50 decision.  Game MVP Aliou Sesay led the Lancers with a game high 30 points while grabbing a team high nine rebounds. Connor Kyliuk also finished in double digits with 11 points.  Cole Penner led Garden City in scoring with 13 points, including three-three pointers. Miguel Guevarra added 11 points. Tyrece Viner-Cox led Garden City with 15 rebounds.
 Garden City will face John Taylor in the 3rd place game Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.

Sisler 74 Dakota 61 [Championship Final]



 The Sisler Spartans captured their first Wesmen Classic High School Championship title in 22 years with a 74-61 victory over the Dakota Lancers Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre.  Sisler last Wesmen Classic Championship title came in 1994. Dakota last won a Classic title back in 1998.  Tournament MVP Don Dayrit led Sisler with 28 points, including five-three pointers. Shawn Maranan and Andrei Sansano each had 11.  Dakota was led by Redeemed Kabashiki and Connor Kyliuk each scoring 15 points. Dini Ahmed finished with 12.  The Lancers led early jumping out to a 24-17 lead after the opening quarter. Sisler made their move in a low scoring second quarter, outscoring the Lancers 15-6 to take a 32-30 lead at the halftime break. The Spartans continued to carry play in the third quarter, outscoring the Lancers 25-22 to take a 57-52 lead into the fourth. The Spartans stepped up their defensive play in the fourth quarter holding Dakota to nine points while scoring 17 to close out the 74-61 victory.
